No Surprise Here: Climate Action Campaign Founder and Executive Director Nicole Capretz a Finalist for 2016 San Diego Woman of the Year
San Diego Magazine Nod Highlights Capretz’s Role in San Diego’s 100% Clean Energy Climate Plan

SAN DIEGO, August 19, 2016—Nicole Capretz, Founder and Executive Director of San Diego’s leading climate watchdog organization, Climate Action Campaign, and author of the City of San Diego’s groundbreaking 100% Clean Energy Climate Action Plan, has been named a finalist for San Diego Magazine’s 2016 Woman of the Year Award. The award is given to one woman each year who has worked tirelessly to create positive change. The winner will be announced on September 29, and all finalists will be featured in San Diego Magazine’s September issue, set for release today.

“Climate action is the fight of my life and the biggest fight of our time. I’m honored to be recognized for my work on this,” says Capretz, who can often be seen biking to downtown meetings in high heels to advocate for clean energy and public transit. Nicole-biking-dress_800x1200

Capretz is well known in the region for her bold leadership on the creation and adoption of San Diego’s groundbreaking, legally binding Climate Action Plan, which aims to power 100% of San Diego with 100% clean energy, cut carbon emissions in half, revolutionize San Diego’s public transit, walking, and biking opportunities, eliminate waste, and boost the urban tree canopy.

After authoring the Climate Plan at City Hall, Capretz founded Climate Action Campaign to secure the Plan’s adoption and help other cities in San Diego do the same. Building a base of more than 2,500 supporters and bringing together a suite of non-traditional partners from environmental, business, labor, developer, clean-tech, public health, economic development, equity and community organizations, the work of Capretz and her team lead to the unanimous, bipartisan adoption of San Diego’s Climate Plan in December 2015.

Since founding Climate Action Campaign in January 2015, Capretz and her team have been featured in more than 175 media stories across the country, including in the New York Times, Fortune Magazine, NPR, Scientific American, The Guardian, The Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, The Boston Globe, ClimateWire from E&E news,, the San Diego Union Tribune, Voice of San Diego, and many other local news outlets. Capretz’s work has also earned her recognition as the 2015 Voice of the Year by Voice of San Diego, 2015 Newsmaker of the Year by East County Magazine, winner of Sierra Club San Diego’s FEAT Award, and winner of the San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action Making a Difference Award, and winner of the 2016 San Diego County Democratic Party Leadership Award.

In 2016, in addition to helping San Diego successfully implement its Climate Plan as an appointed member of its Climate Action Plan Implementation Working Group, Capretz and her team have also been instrumental in significant successes around the region, including Del Mar’s recent adoption of a 100% Clean Energy Climate Action Plan and movement by Solana Beach and Encinitas toward creating 100% clean energy climate plans.
