Community Choice Energy Moves forward in Solana Beach

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Community Choice Energy Moves forward in Solana Beach

SOLANA BEACH, CA, November 29, 2016On November 16, the Solana Beach City Council voted 4-1 to select a consultant to provide Community Choice Energy services, including assessing, developing, financing, implementing and managing a “turn-key” Community Choice Energy (or Community Choice Aggregation, “CCA”) program for the City.kath_solanabeachcce_nov2016_1200px

As explained in the Solana Beach Staff Report: “The Goal of a CCA is to provide a higher percentage of renewable energy electricity at competitive and potentially cheaper rates than existing Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs), while giving consumers local choices and promoting the development of renewable power sources and local job growth.” Solana Beach is the furthest along of the many cities in the region who are exploring Community Choice, including San Diego, Encinitas, Del Mar, Oceanside and others.

The first phase of the Solana Beach Community Choice contract includes robust public engagement, education, and outreach and further assessment of the legal and financial steps needed. The move will have no negative financial impact on the City, and the City can still decide at a later date if it wants to discontinue with additional phases.

Climate Action Campaign’s Director of Operations and Programs, Kayla Race, made this statement:

We applaud Solana Beach for leading our region in exploring Community Choice Energy– the clearest pathway to 100% clean energy, cleaner air, a healthier climate, financial savings for local families and businesses, and a better future for our our children. We support Solana Beach’s commitment to robust public engagement as they move forward with Community Choice Energy and we we look forward to seeing a Community Choice Energy Program put into place with broad public support in the near future.

We are also encouraged by the forward movement on Community Choice Energy in Encinitas, Del Mar, Oceanside, San Diego, La Mesa and more to come. These cities are proving they are unphased by SDG&E’s bullying tactics to squash families’ freedom of clean energy choice. And our region is showing the nation we can and will lead with local action to stop climate change and protect our quality of life, one city at a time.

Community Choice Energy will help Solana Beach meet the goals of the Climate Action Plan the city is in the process of developing. Solana Beach’s Climate Action Commission is hosting a public workshop on the draft climate plan on Thursday, November 17 at 6pm at Solana Beach City Hall.
