January 24, 2017 – Breaking News: Big win for urban trees when San Diego City Council unanimously passed the 5 year Urban Forestry Plan. This plan is a huge step in the right direction because it actually implements the goal in the Climate Action Plan to achieve 15% urban tree canopy cover by 2020 and 35% by 2035. We are currently only at 13% urban tree cover according to 2015 estimates, so it is crucial that we have a solid plan that delineates exactly how to move forward.
We’re super excited for the cooling effect, lowered energy costs, cleaner air and safer, more beautiful neighborhoods just to name a few of the benefits. Underserved communities will be the first to benefit from the direct and positive impacts of a dense urban tree canopy. CAC will continue to watchdog this and other CAP implementation measures as we go big or go home in 2017.
