HISTORY MADE! Solana Beach Votes in Support of Community Choice Energy!

Solana Beach First in Region to Move Forward with Alternative to SDG&E

Climate Action Campaign congratulates the City of Solana Beach on their vote this evening to move forward with Phase I of their Community Choice Energy Program.

“It is an incredible moment in San Diego’s history,” said Nicole Capretz, Climate Action Campaign’s Executive Director. “Solana Beach is setting the stage so that families can enjoy the freedom of energy choice, benefit from stable and likely lower rates, choose more clean energy options, and ensure the city can reach 100% clean electricity.  It’s a win for all.”

This historic vote secures the city’s legacy as a pioneer in climate and environmental stewardship. Solana Beach is now poised to launch the first Community Choice Energy Program in the region, joining dozens of communities in California that already have an alternative to their investor-owned utilities.

Community Choice Energy has been identified by the city’s draft Climate Action Plan as the single most pivotal strategy for reaching Solana Beach’s climate reduction goals (including 100% clean electricity), while also offering Solana Beach families and businesses an option for their electricity provider for the first time in over 100 years – a coveted American value called consumer choice.

Community choice is a win for everyone – families, businesses, the city and even the utility. Community choice allows the utility to remain a critical partner as the entity to deliver our power.  It is rare to have a public program that provides such a winning formula for all stakeholders, while also providing tangible economic and environmental benefits to help improve your quality of life.

We appreciate the thoughtful, deliberate and careful consideration that has gone into these proposed agreements with TEA and Calpine Energy.  We support the months of planning and analysis done by staff and outside CCA experts to guide the city of Solana Beach toward a successful program launch.  Today is just the beginning of ongoing checks and balances to ensure that Solana Beach is designing and developing a program that benefits Solana Beach families and businesses, while also achieving your climate goals.

We look forward to continuing to work with Solana Beach in the months and years ahead as it continues blaze trails as the regional leader in climate solutions.
