SEAB Votes to Move Forward with Community Choice Energy
Community and Business Leader Alliance Tells Mayor That Time for Action is Now

Nov. 16, 2017—Today, the city’s Sustainable Energy Advisory Board (SEAB) voted to approve a recommendation to move forward with a proposed Community Choice Energy (CCE) program for the City of San Diego.

“San Diego is speaking loud and clear that now is the time to move forward with Community Choice Energy,” said Nicole Capretz of Climate Action Campaign. “We call on Mayor Faulconer to bring this item forward and start work on a business plan without delay. CCE is the best way to reach our city’s mandated goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2035, as well as give families the choice in electricity providers they deserve along with lower rates, local clean energy and local jobs.”

The board’s action marked the city’s first official vote on Community Choice Energy after a feasibility study returned positive results in July. SEAB is appointed by the mayor and Council to advise them on energy policy and remove barriers to renewable energy development in the city, according to the city’s website. The board is made up a diverse selection of community, business, and clean technology leaders.

Mikey Knab of Business for Good San Diego said such a program would greatly benefit local businesses. “I’m happy to see that community leaders are aligned with the goals of San Diego’s small business owners,” said Knab. “Not only is Community Choice Energy good for families, their pocketbooks and the environment, it’s crucial for businesspeople who need lower utility bills to thrive here in the city.”
