KPBS: San Diego Group Out To Prove Green New Deal Is Attainable By Reaching Zero Emissions Here

August 22 – KPBS – Brooke Ruth and Mark Sauer Report – As lawmakers work to pass climate change legislation in Washington, San Diego is working on its own version of the Green New Deal. A speaker series on it continues Thursday night.

The Green New Deal is a framework for addressing climate change and economic inequality. The San Diego version will attempt to layout a regional approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of the San Diego Green New Deal Speaker Series, SANDAG executive director Hasan Ikhrata will speak about biking, walking and transit at 5:30 p.m. at the City Heights Center on University Avenue in San Diego.

The largest portion of greenhouse gas emissions in California come from the transportation sector which includes tailpipe emissions from on and off-road vehicles, engines and diesel-powered construction equipment.

The speaker series is sponsored by the San Diego Climate Action Campaign. Director Nicole Capretz joins Midday Edition on Thursday to discuss the goals of the series.
