— 2022 ANNUAL REPORT —

MOMENTUM

The movement for climate justice is gaining momentum, but so are climate disasters. In 2022, local, state, and federal climate action accelerated, marking a new era for the climate movement with bigger and bolder commitments and more funding for the solutions we need.

Climate Action Campaign is capitalizing on this momentum to build a pathway to zero carbon—right here in Southern California—then replicate and scale.

REGIONAL

In 2022, CAC pushed against the current dangerous and ineffective siloed approach to climate action by advocating for cities and agencies to work together. We helped pass the County of San Diego’s first-in-the-nation Regional Decarbonization Framework (RDF) and Just Transition Plan. This project mapped regional opportunities for collaboration on transportation, energy, electrification, and housing. In 2023, we’re partnering with the County of San Diego to educate our community about the solutions in the RDF.

FIGHTING FOR PUBLIC HEALTH AND CLIMATE SOLUTIONS

Climate change is a public health emergency, so we’re activating and engaging public health professionals through our Public Health Advisory Council (PHAC). This year, they advocated for policies to curb pollution from dangerous methane gas, advance 100% clean energy, and protect our health and safety.

SAN DIEGO CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

After a year of advocacy by CAC and partners, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to adopt an updated Climate Action Plan. The CAP update set ambitious goals for clean energy, transportation, land use, equity, and more.

It also includes a bold commitment to electrify our appliances and phase dangerous methane gas out from nearly all homes and businesses by 2035. Moving forward, we’ll advocate for San Diego to fully fund and implement the CAP so that residents can enjoy the quality of life benefits.

EXPANDING ACCESS TO CLEAN ENERGY

Through CAC’s advocacy, San Diego Community Power and the Clean Energy Alliance expanded their reach to 13 cities and the unincorporated county. They will bring cost-competitive and cleaner electricity to 1.23 million people in our region in 2023.

Our communities have been locked into buying electricity from our anti-climate utility for over a century, but now we finally have a real choice.

CAMPAIGNING FOR CLIMATE ACTION

This year, we co-signed and campaigned for two successful City of San Diego ballot measures: Measures B and C! We also supported Measure D, which passed.

EVENTS AND OUTREACH

In 2022, Climate Action Campaign engaged over 1200+ community members through our educational presentations, events, and programming.

200+ community members attended our inaugural NEXUS climate conference, which brought policymakers, business and labor leaders, public health officials, and community activists together for candid conversations about achieving a zero carbon future.

BUILDING POWER THROUGH COALITIONS: SDGNDA AND OCCC

Community will and coalitions get the job done, which is why we lead the grassroots San Diego Green New Deal Alliance and Orange County Climate Coalition. In 2022, the San Diego Green New Deal Alliance continued to hold space for important conversations and campaigns at the intersection of climate, jobs, and justice, including San Diego’s Climate Action Plan update. In 2022, the Orange County Climate Coalition galvanized activists and organizations around campaigns for electrification, equity, and climate action. With a new slate of climate champions slated to enter office in Orange County in 2023, we’re ready to capitalize on the community and political will we’ve built to pass climate policies.
