Chula Vista and La Mesa Vote to Join Regional Community Choice Program
Cities Set Region on Course For 100% Clean Energy by 2035
CHULA VISTA and LA MESA, CA, September 10, 2019 — Tonight, the cities of Chula Vista and La Mesa approved a Joint Powers Authority agreement that will establish a regional Community Choice Energy (CCE) program anchored by the city of San Diego. Other cities set to vote over the next two weeks on the language of the JPA include Encinitas, and Imperial Beach. The city of San Diego also has to adopt the final JPA agreement.
Chula Vista Mayor, Mary Salas, stated “"Chula Vista has long been a leader in protecting our environment and taking action on climate. Our kids and grandkids deserve clean air, clean water, and a livable climate, and that's what getting to 100% clean energy is all about. With the health and welfare of future generations on the line, this regional effort to launch one of the biggest Community Choice programs in the state shows that our region is ready to embrace the big, bold solutions we need to address the climate crisis."
La Mesa City Councilmember, Bill Baber commented, "La Mesa is serious about meeting our climate goals, and bringing Community Choice to the region to get to 100% clean energy and introduce competition and choice to the energy sector is just a no-brainer. I'm proud that La Mesa is moving forward with this program that will bring so many benefits to our families and businesses, and I look forward to getting to work to make sure we launch the strongest program in the state!"
Members of the San Diego Community Choice Alliance (SDCCA) spoke in support of the regional JPA in both cities. SDCCA coordinator and Climate Action Campaign advocate, Matthew Vasilakis stated, “We are excited to see La Mesa and Chula Vista emerge as early leaders within the regional JPA. Cities across our region are joining forces to take back control of our energy future. We look forward to working with them to realize the promise of Community Choice Energy.”
SDCCA members also stressed the importance of the adoption of key principles by the JPA board, including commitments to public transparency, clean energy, local power development, good middle class union jobs, and purposeful investment in frontline communities of concern.
