QUOTES: Edison International announces $534 million Q2 earnings, energy advocates direct blame for 101% 10-year rate increase to state leaders

ROSEMEAD, CA — Edison International, the public utility holding company owning Southern California Edison (SCE), posted $534 million in second-quarter net income, a 55.69% increase from 2025’s second-quarter net income ($343 million).

The report follows the utility’s dramatic profit surge last year — a 200% increase in 2025, totaling $4.9 billion — that occurred the same year that evidence suggests its equipment sparked the devastating Eaton Fire. A report by the Energy and Policy Institute indicates that, last year, SCE had some of the highest national profit margins.

These profits contrast with the financial strain facing California households and businesses. Electricity rates for SCE customers have increased 101% over the past decade.

Advocates say the state is failing to protect families from skyrocketing energy rates and needs to pass proposed state legislation that increases regulatory oversight of private utilities, such as SoCal Edison.

“Energy bills are in the governor's lap,” says Nicole Capretz, Chief Executive Officer, Climate Action Campaign. “The state has the power to increase regulatory oversight of private utilities. There’s state legislation on the table right now that would hold these monopoly utilities accountable and target some drivers of high energy costs.”

“Summer heat is brutal, and our families should never have to choose between turning on their A/C or running fans and keeping bills low,” said Tomas Castro, Steering Committee Member, Orange County Climate Coalition. “Yet that’s the reality. Shades shuttered, blinds closed, and dangerous living conditions because of energy bills that soar ad nauseam.”
