2022 LETTER FROM THE CEO

Updated: Jan 20, 2023

2022 was a watershed moment for the climate movement. As we enter this new era, we must work across sectors to transform our economy, create good, green jobs, and invest in the solutions our communities deserve. My team is fighting to ensure that the communities that have suffered the most from environmental racism and disinvestment are the FIRST to receive the benefits of climate policies and investments.

In San Diego and Orange Counties, Climate Action Campaign is leading the charge on equitable regional climate action and cooperation, driving climate policies forward in every agency and city. As a result of our advocacy this year:

  • 1.23 million people in 13 cities and the unincorporated county will have a cleaner alternative to SDG&E via San Diego Community Power and the Clean Energy Alliance.

  • The City of San Diego passed a zero carbon Climate Action Plan, with a bold commitment to phase dangerous methane gas out from nearly all homes and businesses by 2035.

  • The County of San Diego passed its first-in-the-nation Regional Decarbonization Framework and Just Transition Plan, outlining regional opportunities for collaboration on transportation, energy, electrification, and housing.

  • Sharp Healthcare became the first San Diego health system to power all its facilities with 100% clean energy through San Diego Community Power.

  • San Diego will have more equitable trash services, homes for our growing workforce, and better job standards for workers.

In addition to our advocacy and organizing, our team:

  • Released our 5th Edition Climate Action Plan Report Card, analyzing progress on climate action in cities in San Diego County.

  • Engaged over 1200+ community members through educational presentations, events, and programming.

  • Connected cities in our region to funding opportunities through our new Climate Funding Newsletter.

  • Tapped into new leadership through our Public Health Advisory Council and Academics As Activists group.

  • Led the grassroots San Diego Green New Deal Alliance and Orange County Climate Coalition.

Next year, we’ll capitalize on the momentum we’ve built to create the sustainable, equitable, and just Southern California we know is possible.

Thank you for standing with us,

- Nicole Capretz, CAC Founder and Chief Executive Officer
