The City of San Diego is voting to potentially support a package of state bills that lower utility costs for San Diego families
The background: Our communities are struggling to make ends meet, burdened with ever-increasing energy bills. As the City tries to address affordability, it can’t look past our utility rates, which SDG&E has raised by 82% in the last decade. While San Diego families struggle to pay their bills, SDG&E is raking in nearly $1 billion a year in profit, with few consequences from regulators.Â
What’s happening: We are pushing the City to demand accountability from SDG&E as they push for higher and higher rates and profits. We are calling on the City to support a package of state bills that will finally help provide rate relief. The first vote is coming this week.Â
What will the bills do: The Utility Affordability and Accountability Legislative Package has the ability to increase oversight and ensure long-term affordability. These bills limit rate increases, tighten utility reporting to increase transparency and avoid overcharging, and keep the cost of utility lobbying, advertising, and other activities out of our monthly energy bills.Â
Why it matters: It’s time to reclaim our power and take the reins. As the second-largest city in California, San Diego has the opportunity to leverage its power in Sacramento to lower our utility bills.Â
We’re bringing together a strong coalition to make sure our local electeds are doing everything they can to push these bills across the finish line Â
