We’re thrilled to announce that the Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) passed a clean air, clean energy resolution that protects our students, teachers, and school community!
What This Means
This resolution champions a fossil fuel-free district by 2035! Here’s how:
100% Clean Energy: By April 2025, CUSD will transition to 100% clean energy through Clean Energy Alliance’s Green Impact service.
Switching to Electric Systems: All new buildings will be fully electric, and existing gas systems will be replaced with electric alternatives at the end of their lifecycle.
Green Curriculum: Climate change education and green career pathways will be integrated into TK-12 curriculum by 2026.
Electric Fleet: All gas-powered district vehicles will be replaced with electric vehicles.
Why It Matters
Indoor air pollution can be up to five times worse than outdoor air. For students, teachers, and staff who spend hours inside these spaces, gas-powered systems pose serious health risks, including asthma and other respiratory issues.
“Whether it’s a walk to unwind or dropping your kid at school, cleaner air at CUSD would improve daily lives in our district.” — Kayley Teagle, Sage Creek High School Graduate
At a time when federal policies threaten clean air protections, CUSD is stepping up to fight for a climate-resilient future. As Southern California battles wildfires and escalating climate impacts, this resolution is vital in safeguarding our communities.
How We Won
Students delivered a clear and powerful message compelling school districts to follow their lead: action is non-negotiable. This victory was powered by the voices of students, parents, and community advocates:
Students delivered passionate public comments, urging leaders to take bold action.
Over 40 advocates spoke up and sent emails to the board of trustees.
Next Steps
With local jurisdictions and cities delaying progress, schools are becoming local climate leaders. We’re proud to continue working with students, teachers, and the school community to electrify schools across Southern California.Watch the impact of our wins and learn more about the Switch on Success campaign:
